Day 2 Afternoon - Saturday 9/16

We finally made it to The Gap & are on our first pass through.

This is Adam K's car parked along the side of the road. He drove part way through the gap, but did not make it all the way. He parked it here & started walking for help. When we went by we saw the car, but did not know why it was parked & did not see anyone by it. So we did not stop to see what was going on.

I'm not really sure how they got this in the gap or how they are getting it out, but I sure wouldn't want to do it.

Sue & Dan past Adam & his friend, but where not sure why he was walking, but at the gap there is no place to park & ask questions. So they kept on driving. Later Pat & I went by & saw Adam at a pull off with a bunch of people by him. So we thought they where just pulled off chatting. We did not know that his car was stuck in the gap. Someone who was at the pull off gave them rides to the lodge.

We got all unpacked and headed off to eat

At the restraunt ready to eat

After we ate, we headed over to the ice cream shop for desert. There where others from the Miata club there that we ate with. While talking, we thought we would go drive through the gap. It was dark as we where starting to drive, but that was no problem other than meetings cars. If you meet them in a corner and you are on the outside of the corner, you have to stop and let them go by because you can see with the lights in your eyes. 5 cars decided to go & I was the last. We meet cars a couple of times & once I almost came to a stop as I met some cars at a corner. That put me quite a ways behind everyone, but that didn't really matter as we all where going to the same place. We where actually in 3 groups now. Two cars, then the next two that where back a little ways, and then me back a little further.

Everything was going good, other than I could not see the cars in front of me. Then they told me the first two cars swerved for something in the road, the next two cars drove over the thing in the road, and when I got there I had a decision to make in a fraction of a second. It's suprising how much you can think in a short little time. As I approched the item which looked like a small brown bag about the size of a McDonald's bag, I got on the breaks. I then had to decided weather to swerve for the item to avoid it, or to go over it. I thought if I swerved & did not make it, it would be bad to hit the item with my tire and possibly loose control of the car if the item was hard. But the item looked like a brown paper bag so I decided to go over it.

As I went over "The Bag" I heard the bag hit & then everything went white. I thought why is everything white? Then the white started to go away & I realized what I was seeing was white airbag. I could see the airbag deflating & dust settling from the explosion, it didn't taste very good either. As I pushed the bag out of the way, I radioed ahead & told everyone I was pulling over to the side because I hit something & my airbag went off. As I pulled to a stop I saw the windshield was shattered & I thought this isn't going to be good.

Only two of the cars ahead of me had readios & the car Pat was in did not have one. So as they turned they yelled over to the other two cars that I hit something as was stopped along the side of the road. That sorta freaked Pat out, but when they arived she was happy to see me walking around :)

When everyone arrived I had the first car keep going and see what was on the road & get a picture of it and bring it back if they could find it. They found a small piece of it and it was a rock that apparently fell from the mountain. I kept it, but do not have a picture of it yet. As they where there, they took pictures of the road. The pictures are a little blurry, but they where taken at night, with a flash, without a tripod, while standing in the middle of the road :) So...ya can't complain to much LOL

As you can see, the spot I hit the rock is a slight straight which was nice as while the airbag was inflated I could not see where I was going. If it had been in a tight turn with another turn right after I would have not been able to see the next turn & it could have been bad. Dan picked up the piece of the rock that he could find, & I'm gonna keep it as a souvenir of the trip. This was only a little piece of the rock that broke off. The rubber mat that the rock is sitting on is made up of 1/2" to 3/4" squares to give you an idea of its size.

To get back, I cut the airbag off the steering wheel and drove it back slow.
