8/2 Friday (Day 7)

Here is the overflow area for the motel. They lady that runs the place lives in the back. The window to the left on the ground floor was our window.

This is the outside door that we had access to. If you look to the right you can see the brick chimney that is the same chimney that you can see on the left of the house in the photo to the left.

As you walked in from the street, you came into this room with the two looms (or whatever they are called) in it. Our door was just to the left of this one. Not the doorway you can see to the left in this photo, but to the left of this doorway.

Here is the other one.

As the place was opening up this morning as we were still getting up and taking pictures. Luckily we were both dressed and almost ready to leave when a guy walked in on us. He did not know we were spending the night there. He just walked up to the door and came in. Didn't knock or anything. Pat was outside at the time. He was all Apologetic and left. It was funny since we were both dressed :)

We started the day by going to a store we saw the night before during our walk. It was a small general store. We then ate breakfast at a restaurant in town, and the waitress suggested a couple of places to go. So we took her advice to go up the highest peak in Virginia. About 2 miles up the road, the road turned to gravel. We decided to continue. The road was bad but we were not sure how far we had to go. Not only was it gravel, but there were large holes & rocks sticking out of the gravel. We made it up to a sign that said 2 miles to the peak and we decided to turn around. That would have made it around 9 miles total up to the top in gravel. We decided once we got to the top, would just have to turn around and come back down. Since we weren't havin' fun in the gravel & rocks, we decided to turn around. I don't know why I didn't take any photos of the huge pot holes or rocks sticking up out of the road. Oh well, take my word for it, it wasn't pretty, especially for a Miata!

We thought this mountain was cool with the rock ridge running up it.

Here it is from another angle.

The next thing we were going to try was to visit a cave. There were 2 in the general direction we were going. The waitress suggested one, so we went to it. It was a good time & we both had fun.

Here is the entrance to the cave. It is called the Smoke Hole cave.

The reason the cave is called the Smoke Hole is because when the Indians originally found it, they used it to smoke their meat in. They never went far in the cave because they were afraid of evil spirits. Later the military used it to hide ammo during battles. Small piles of ammo were found back in the corners. I guess they hid them very well.. Later it was used by moon shiners, and they had a sample still set up. I had heard this before, but I had forgot, so I thought I would add it here. You can see the jugs in front with the X's on them. They reason for the X was that it went through the still once. An XX meant it went through twice. The XXX meant it went through 3 times. They said this was so potent that you could use it for fuel in your car.

Our tour guide is at the front facing us. She had won some local beauty contests, and was getting ready to go to State.

It is hard to tell from the photo, but his was a little spring. The water bubbles up out of it, and made the stalagmite type thing. It was pretty neat to see.

There's the tour guide again.

We then found some more good twisties while looking for a place to eat. We found a place in Accident. We thought it was funny, so we took a couple of photos and stopped for food.

We stopped to eat in Accident at a small place. We got a table by the wall. After sitting down & looking at the menu we decided to get the all you can eat Friday night fish fry. When I got up to go to the bar the first time, I hit a shelf on the wall. I caught part of it on the way down to the floor & slowed the rest down. Everyone came out to see what happened. They all asked if I was OK. I was, I barely felt it, much unlike the decoration. They said something to me several times as we were there. Once the manager said stuff would just walk its way to the edge of the shelf every time the door next to it was closed, & it would eventually fall off. She said she had a wreath to put there to replace it, but just never did it. I told her she now had a little more motivation to make it happen. The guy at the table next to me talked to me at the food bar. He asked, "Are you trying to knock the wall down?" He said after I did that, they looked at the wall by them to make sure they did not do the same thing. Not long after I knocked the decoration off (we were sitting by the doors to go into the kitchen) I just about got hit by one of the doors. It was swinging open as I was walking by, it was our waitress coming out of the kitchen. Just wasn't my night I guess. I was an Accident waiting to happen.

We also stopped at an Amish food stand and got some Oatmeal Raisin cookies. Pat quizzed the kid at the booth a little on the horses they have. He said they were "Standard". She asked if they were workhorses and he said no, road horses. We also heard a motor running and he said they could have them for compressors & stuff. He also had a calculator to total the sales up on. But he did say he could not have stuff like a bike. I'll try to let you know how the cookies are tomorrow :)

There were several Amish fields with hay stacked by hand. Pat thought it was cool, so here's a photo :)

We thought this was different, so here's another photo :)

We drove through Mt Davis along the way.
