We started off the day with breakfast at the hotel & then packed to leave with the group. I filled up with gas, came back to the hotel, & arrived for the drivers meeting. While waiting around, Willie asked me if I had any duct tape, his wife needed some to tape a hole that was forming in a bag that she was using. I said no, I didn't have any, although I did look at tape as I was packing for the trip but unfortunatly I did not think I would need it. Guess I was wrong. This was the second thing I should have brought that I decided not to bring. We started looking around and saw Sal's car was not touched and noticed we had not seen him (one of our group) all morning. So we gave him a call and found out his alarm had not gone off & he was scrambling to get a shower and packed. While walking around outside, Tom called me over to a Miata with the hood up. It was the Crock's, and it would not start. We all did the normal car guy thing of walking around it and looking at it wondering what was wrong :) They said this has only happened a few times & only happens after they filled it up with gas. If they filled up & drove & kept the car running, everything would be OK. But if they where to fill up, drive a short distance, & then shut the car off, every once in a while it would not start. This had happened a few times over the past year. Some times it had taken as much as 1.5 hours before starting. We thought it may be something in the fuel tank, or maybe the fuel filter since everything else on the car worked OK. The car would crank, just not fire up. There was nothing we could do & they where confident it would start & told us to go on. They would catch up with us later. We left & felt bad about leaving them behind, but the group went on. We waved as we pulled away. We drove on 4 lane roads again in the morning. Today we split up in two groups so when we stopped at gas stations we would not overwelm the small stations along the way. We where in group 2 and once we finally got on 2 lane roads, we passed group 1 at a gas station. A little later down the road, we stopped & group 1 drove by us. Sal was in group 2 with us and for some reason he decided to follow group 1. No problem, it was only one car shifted. As I went inside and was standing in line for the bathroom, I saw little rolls of duct tape. I thought I should get some since I was asked for it earlier, and this roll was so cute since it was so tiny. It is perfect to pack in the Miata. When I got back outside, I offered the duct tape up for use on the hand bag. It seemed to work for a short term fix on the trip :) We started driving again, and our second group sorta got split in two. The first half of the group was going faster than the second half, so we where not in visual contact with them. We could hear them on the CB, just not see them. So we came around a corner & the first car in the second half of our group pulled in to a gas station. The first group stopped at this station & I thought it was the first half of our group. So I pulled in too. Turned out it was group 1. Oh well, now our group is really split :) So we took our potty breaks and figured we would continue on as our own mini group, maybe Group 2.5. As we where getting ready to leave, a couple of cars from group 1 where still there as the rest of group 1 had already left. Willie who needed the tape earlier had purchased a small antique table and was trying to fit it in cars. They finally got it in one, and we where all off as a new sub group of group 1.5 & group 2.5. We now had on official Group 3. We drove quite a ways and where back on 4 lanes roads when we where getting close to where we had to turn off on 2 lane roads, and our group split again. We now had Group 3 & Group 4. Group 4 went to ship the table and Group 3 continued on. We finally caught up with the groups at the lunch break. While we where eating, group 2 left. Just as we where finishing eating, Group 1 was leaving. We just barely got out in time to go join in with group 1, and we followed them all the way to the gap :) So now we where part of Group 1 We all stopped at the start of Deals Gap & took a picture of each car as we headed off. We drove the gap and headed straight for the lodge. Once there we talked with everyone and saw white water rafters going by the lodge in the river that is right next to it. So we watched for a while, unpacked, & watched some more. We saw several kyacs tip and right themselves. One guy tipped & could not get back up. He had to slide out & go to the shore to get back in. Another guy in a white water canoe & had falled out and lost his canoe. We watched them try to get his canoe unlodged from the bank & over to the other side of the river where he was. Then as we where getting ready to eat, there was a lady that not only got dumped, but lost everything, canoe, paddle, glasses, etc. The Crock's car is possibly the coil the dealer said. They checked the fuel pump & changed the fuel filter. Sal forgot some of his clothes, shorts & all t-shirts As we where eating, we saw her again & said her canoe was under water & she would have to come back tomorrow to try to get it when the water went back down. They let water out of a dam & because of that, everyone was there rafting. Se said this was the first time the water had be let out of this dam in 40 years, so the rafters where out like crazy. After dinner, we went on tours to see everyones cabbins since they are all different. Even the rooms in the main building are each different. After our mini tours, we headed for our annual dam tour. We took our tour, and as we where leaving, we decided to take a drive through the gap in the dark. |
