Day 8 (Saturday) -Mommoth Cave Historic Tour

We had to wait for an hour for it to start the tour, so we had some time to kill. While waiting we went to the gift shop and looked around. I wanted to get a nice shirt with a collar so I could wear it to work, but they did not have one. I couldn't believe it, all the shirts they had, and not one with a collar. I was going to get one at the last cave we were in, but decided I would rather have one from Mammoth, but no luck. Dang!

As the tour was about to start we had to run from the gift shop to the Visitor Center through the rain. Then we had to walk through the rain on the tour to get to the cave. On the way to the tour start we passed some cool little water falls and someone asked about them. The ranger said they are nice, but they disappear about an hour after the rain stops. Once in the cave, our being wet made the 54deg air even cooler. Here's the best photos I could get.

This was our Ranger that led us through the cave.

We don't remember for sure, but the only thing I can think is that these stairs where built by the miners to get up to different areas of the cave. Especially since they are not used for the tour.

This was one of many small areas that was used as an area to collect what was mined. There where many of small areas along the path that we walked. They mainly mined Saltpeter to produce gun powder. Other times people collected large quantities of minerals such as gypsum, selenite, mirabilite, and epsomite. Even today scientists are unsure why these early people collected these minerals

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe this is where they said they minning from, or maybe where they where dropping off scrap.

Graffiti from the 1800's!

We're goin' down!

Hmmm....a bottomless pit?

Ha, even Pat has to duck for this one!

Fat Man's Misery puts the Squeeze on Pat!

Once the tour ended, we came out the cave the same way we went in. As we walked back to the ranger station, we could still see some of the water making the small waterfalls that where there when we started to tour. Since it wasn't raining anymore, we could take some photos :)
